Chet La More
Primarily an abstract artist, Chet La More lived and worked in New York City in the 30's and 40's becoming involved in the WPA program. During this time he was also president of the Artists Union of New York. In addition to pursuing his art La More taught and began his teaching career at the Albright Art School in Buffalo, New York later becoming Professor of Art at the University of Michigan in 1947. La More's influences ranged from the surrealist artists of the 30's and 40's to Native American, African and Oceanic primitive art of which he amassed a very important collection. He had numerous one-man shows in New York at the ACA Gallery and Perls Gallery, two influential proponents of American modernism. His work was also exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Musee D'Art Moderne, Paris
